Valentin Vergara School, Bahia Blanca, province of Buenos Aires
The building, in a neoclasical French style, was planned by the architect Julio Gazarry.
Like most provincial cities, the City of Bahia Blanca preserves those places that have a special meaning to its historical, cultural, architectonic or educational development. ?Valentin Vergara School could be included among those buildings that have been preserved by the Government of Bahia Blanca.
A great triangular frontis is offered to the visitor sustained by four columns with Ionic capitals and other four fake columns on a wall of identical capital, framing the three front doors of Valentin Vergara School in Bahia Blanca.
The school has been named after the governor who, according to the available records from that time, promised (and fulfilled his promise) to take care of the needs in terms of buildings that were required in order to provide the supporting structure to the increasing educational needs of the growing population.
The monumental building of the Valentin Vergara School, first named Centennial School due to the fact that it was inaugurated during the celebration of the city’s centennial celebrations, was part of the governor’s educational project.
The construction of the building began on April 7, 1927. Architect Julio Gazarry projected it in a clear French neoclassical style. The budget assigned by the Architecture Direction of the Province was of 491 thousand Argentine Pesos.
The scape of the columns exhibits on the top part the wide grooves from the Doric order, that are interrupted later with the Roman or Toscan orders that are completely plane and which are seen in the columns holding the lateral frontis of the front facade.
As was common practice at the time the building was constructed, the symbols representing the purpose of the building are clearly emphasized in its monumental facade.
