The old Carriages Road, or Royal Road Nº 1, linked the City of Buenos Aires with villages such as 25 de Mayo (25th of May) or Chivilcoy, in the Province of Buenos Aires.

In the year 1854, when Sarmiento established the Swiss and Italian colonies, a group of people eager to settle down arrived to the old Carriages Road.

It was on a 22nd of October, but the diverging opinions arising in the bosom of the group, led Federico Soares and Coria, two of the main pioneers, jointly with others, to separate themselves from the rest with a two-wheels carriage in order to arrive to the place in front of what is today the Government House, where Coria stuck the shovel in the ground as a symbol of the centre of the foundation.

Coria thus became the founder, joined definitely by the group, and from then on the city of Chivilcoy emerges.

The name was taken from a Tribe leader of the region called Chivilcoy. It is located in the centre of the province of Buenos Aires and is bathed by the Salado River and its affluent, i.e. San Antonio, Chivilcoy, Hinojo, and others.

The memory of Chivilcoy is preserved by Chivilcoy’s Historic Complex, inside of which Francisco Castagnino’s Museum is located. This museum was shaped by Castagnino’s son in the memory of his father, who was a distinguished citizen of Chivilcoy.
